Amber Gordon

Why did you choose Point Park University?

Point Park was a no-brainer for me because of the nature of my major. There is no other program like SAEM. Also, Pittsburgh is an incredible city for the industry I want to work in. There is always something happening here and I love it.

You're a Pioneer Ambassador for a second time this summer. How did you land this position?

The Pioneer Ambassador position is highly selective. Going through the interview process the first time around was very nerve wracking because there was a lot of competition, but luckily I was chosen! Working as a PA last year was the best summer of my life, and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. I had to re-interview for the position this year, but I knew what to expect coming back as a returner. I love all of the new PAs already and I can't wait to spend my summer with them.

How can the class of #PointPark21 make the most of their Pioneer Experience?

One thing I didn't do at my own Pioneer Experience but wish I had was try to be more extroverted. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Walk up to a stranger and say hi! Everybody is in the same boat and is just as confused and awkward as you. Taking that first step to say hi to someone can make all the difference. You may even meet your best friend or roommate for the next four years during orientation (I did!) so try not to be shy. Everyone wants to make new friends.

Where is your favorite place to hang out Downtown in the summer?

I really love going to Schenley Park. It's a beautiful place to read, draw or just sit and talk with friends. I also like to hang out anywhere there is food. My favorite restaurants right now are Meat & Potatoes, Tako and Nicky's Thai in the Strip District.

List the three best things about Pittsburgh.

  1. There is always something going on - sports, concerts, events, etc.
  2. The food is incredible. Pierogies, Primanti Bros. and the burnt almond torte from Prantl's Bakery in Market Square are a few of my favorites.
  3. The Pittsburgh Penguins #BecauseItsTheCup

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Try new things and take the opportunities presented to you. Get to know your professors. Turn off Netflix, leave your room and go to events on campus (they usually involve free food). Have fun (as long as your assignments are done), and as hard as it may be sometimes, don't skip your 8 a.m. classes!
