"Coming from a small town, I felt a bit limited in my career options. But in Downtown Pittsburgh, I can truly become anyone I want to become."

Rhianna Davis

Why did you choose Point Park University?

As cliché as it sounds, I chose Point Park because of its location. Having large corporations and organizations right near campus provides so many internship and job opportunities. I also love the city atmosphere and think I would like to live Downtown post-grad. Coming from a small town, I felt a bit limited in my career options. But in Downtown Pittsburgh, I can truly become anyone I want to become. I’ve already had so many amazing experiences, like working for the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and exploring what companies I’d like to intern for in the future. I am so happy with my choice to attend such an accepting university full of opportunities.

How are you involved on campus?

The better question here is what I am not involved in? I am a part of the Campus Activities Board on the advertising and public relations committees. I am the social media manager for Phi Beta Lambda, our professional fraternity on campus. I am heavily involved in the Honors Student Organization, serving as the social events coordinator for the upcoming school year. I have also taken advantage of multiple opportunities outside of clubs for experiential learning and travel, such as the leadership seminar trip to Disney World with Professors Patrick Mulvihill and Sandy Mervosh. I love staying busy because that’s how I thrive as an individual. Don’t worry, I do take time for myself every once in a while!

Why did you decide to become a resident educator this year?

I decided to apply for the resident educator position to get to know students on campus on a deeper level, to serve as a resource for the Office of Student Life and for my own personal development. I know through this position I will grow in my leadership abilities, conflict management skills, time management and relationship building skills. I cannot wait to see what this year holds for the residence life team. I hope I come out of it with a lot of new friends!

What has going to school in Downtown Pittsburgh taught you?

Going to school in Pittsburgh has taught me that anything is possible. I never knew that social media would become one of my passions on a professional level and I have been taught so much about it by professors such as Patrick Mulvihill and Robert Derda, organizations like the Campus Activities Board, and University Social Media Manager Felicia McKinney. I knew before starting school here that I wanted to work in marketing in some capacity, but being around so many sports teams and event planning groups in the city helped me realize that I want to go into social media marketing, a growing field that I don’t think people realize the potential of just yet.

What is the most important thing you learned during your freshman year?

I learned that the path you think you will take is not necessarily the path you will continue on, and that is okay! Things change and your interests evolve, so try to accept those changes and hit the ground running. Sometimes I hold myself back from doing things outside of my comfort zone, as I am a very regimented person, but trying to explore my options led me to so many of the experiences I have had in my short time as a student here so far.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

My advice is to put yourself out there. You have to do more with your time on campus than just go to class four or five days a week. Join clubs. Seek internship opportunities. Jobs after graduation aren’t just going to fall in our laps. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Talk to someone who is the position that you want to be in one day. Take advantage of all the resources and opportunities this school has to offer. If you look for them, they are plentiful. I promise.
