"Pittsburgh and Point Park are hidden gems. We may not be the most popular city or school, but the opportunities that drew me here have proven to be endless. I’m very happy here."
Why did you choose Point Park?
I chose Point Park because I thought it was the best school for my major, and I’ve always wanted to end up on the east coast eventually. Pittsburgh and Point Park are hidden gems. We may not be the most popular city or school, but the opportunities that drew me here have proven to be endless. I’m very happy here.
How does Pittsburgh compare to your hometown?
I come from a small town in Arizona. It’s cold here, but I’m dealing with Pittsburgh’s winter fairly well. A small town and a big city are usually very different. However, one similarity that I have found is that my hometown and Pittsburgh both have close-knit communities. Even if you aren’t a local, you don’t feel alone.
Where can we find you hanging out on campus?
To be honest, I love having my friends in my dorm. It really feels like a home away from home. If I wanted to spend time in a place outside of my dorm, I would most likely choose Village Park. It’s a great atmosphere to hang out with friends and enjoy the outdoors.
Tell us about your involvement in the Honors Program and Her Campus.
I entered the Honors Program at the start of my freshman year. We’re always trying to help the Pittsburgh community by volunteering however we can. I would definitely suggest applying to become part of the program because there are so many benefits. Helen Fallon, director of the program, is such an amazing person to know. She offers a wide variety of experience and knowledge in many realms.
Her Campus is an online national women’s magazine that has a chapter at Point Park. As a freshman, I was able to secure a position as the Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator. We publish articles every week and always try to participate in local events like the Women’s March. We also donate to local shelters and host a variety of events around the year for different causes.
What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
My favorite part about living in the city is that there is always something to do. You can take the “T” with your roommate and end up in South Hills Village, or you can catch a Pens game just a couple of blocks from campus. There is always something new to see and do. Plus, there’s a coffee shop on every block, which is definitely a nice perk.
What advice would you give to incoming students?
My motto has always been, “do what makes you happy.” I cannot stress that enough. Your major should be what you are interested in and not what society tells you that you should be doing. Don’t be afraid to try new things when you come to college. Don’t be afraid to take a random elective class. If you find yourself happier with a different major, then change it. Choose the college and the major that makes you happy.
