"I had a couple of opportunities to attend other universities out of high school, but what made Point Park’s School of Communication stand out was the ability to get that hands-on experience from day one. You don’t get that experience anywhere else."
Since this story published, Matt Desmond now works as a creative video freelancer.
Tell us about the work you do as a creative content segment producer for NFL Media.
I produce and edit branded and original content including: custom highlights, features, interviews, behind-the-scenes, how-to/instructional, historical documentary, animation and other original video on demand (VOD) series for NFL’s digital and social platforms.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy creating content with a great group of professionals who push the envelope on each and every project. The NFL allows you to flex your creative muscle resulting in content that engages fan bases across the world.
What do you believe sets Point Park’s School of Communication apart from other universities?
I had a couple of opportunities to attend other universities out of high school, but what made Point Park’s School of Communication stand out was the ability to get that hands-on experience from day one. You don’t get that experience anywhere else.
In what ways did our faculty and classes impact you?
The classroom setting was great, you didn't feel like you were a number and the faculty pushed you to excel. Being in an urban environment there were many media organizations within walking distance of Point Park. The proximity to those organizations allowed many opportunities for the student body. What was unique to my college experience was learning from professors who were currently in the field. I was learning from their experiences and not relying on textbook materials. I value the relationships I developed with my professors and classmates at Point Park. I still keep contact with many of them today.
What career advice do you have for our School of Communication students?
Get involved early. There are so many ways to get experience while you’re in college. Take advantage of it. You do not want to arrive to graduation day saying, “I really wish I would of been involved more in getting experience for my career while in college.” Make sure to network any opportunity that you can. Your network is your net worth.
