"If it weren't for the connections I made through the faculty and my classmates at Point Park, I would not be anywhere close to where I am – especially not in the Major Leagues. My internships and the hands-on experience I gained through the clubs I was involved with prepared me more than anything, and nearly all of my past and present employers have been impressed with how much experience I gained just through being involved on-and-off campus."
What steps did you take to secure your job with the Detroit Tigers?
When I graduated, the job market was nonexistent due to the pandemic. I knew I wanted to work in the sports industry and had internships with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates to solidify that. With all the uncertainty, it was simply a waiting game with teams to see when and if they were hiring. Luckily, the Tigers had this position open, and it ended up being a perfect fit!
What are your responsibilities as a communications assistant?
To keep it brief, I am in charge of credentialing all of the media that want to come cover the Tigers, compiling clips (all of the headlines about our team and players) to distribute to our front office every morning, printing out the daily paper materials that the media needs in the press box, ensuring all media have everything they need to make their jobs as easy as possible and acting as a liaison between the media and the players to organize interviews and keep communication open.
Why did you choose Point Park University’s broadcast reporting program?
I knew in high school that I wanted to go to college in the city, and after touring almost all of the universities in the Pittsburgh area, I knew that Point Park would be the best fit for what I wanted to achieve in my life.
In what ways did Point Park prepare you for your career?
If it weren't for the connections I made through the faculty and my classmates at Point Park, I would not be anywhere close to where I am – especially not in the Major Leagues. My internships and the hands-on experience I gained through the clubs I was involved with prepared me more than anything, and nearly all of my past and present employers have been impressed with how much experience I gained just through being involved on-and-off campus.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
As cliché as it sounds, always say yes. If you are presented with an opportunity before you hit the workforce and you aren't sure if it’s for you, say yes! The very least that will come of it will be the knowledge that it is not something you want to pursue in the future. Every yes will come with a multitude of benefits if you get as much out of it as you can.
Final thoughts?
Networking has proven to be the most important tool that I gained from Point Park. All of the events and in-class discussions with professionals that are currently out in the field can be so beneficial, so don’t overlook those opportunities. Point Park’s smaller class sizes combined with its wide professional alumni pool are nothing but beneficial to current students.
