Meghan Macioce

Why did you choose Point Park?

I chose Point Park because of its locationand because from day one you're learning hands-on skills in your major. In my first week as a freshman, I was running a camera and reporting on-air for U-View TV. In addition to that, the faculty and staff here are amazing. It’s more interesting to learn from professors who are still active in the field.

What opportunities have you had through your major?

I have interned for the National Flag Foundation, Trib Live High School Sports Network, Pirates Productions, AT&T SportsNet, University of Pittsburgh Media Relations, Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business, the ACC Network/Pitt Studios and Kidcast, a webcast on Kidsburgh.org and KDKA.com/Kidsburgh. I have done everything from on-air, stats, graphics, social media, public/media relations and producing. I have been lucky to work in several different fields from sports to business to news.

You’re currently a social media coordinator at AT&T SportsNet. Tell us about that role.

It’s been amazing so far! The coolest part about my job is getting to interact with the fansI’ve had the opportunity to work milestone games like Sidney Crosby’s 1,200th career point, Evgeni Malkin’s 1,000th career point, Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Vegas Golden Knights, Chris Archer’s debut as a Pittsburgh Pirate and the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The crew is like a second family because we sit through rain delays, extra innings and overtime, and it helps me get to know them better and talk more about the industry. I like how I can move up within the company as well.

How has getting involved on campus added to your student experience?

Many of my friendships have come from being involved on campus. I’m currently the sports/news director at U-View and the treasurer of Broadcast Education Association (BEA). We went to Las Vegas for BEA earlier this month and won a signature station award! I’m also an Honors Program mentor and for the last two years, I’ve had the opportunity to help incoming freshmen get acquainted on campus and around the city.

What is your favorite Point Park memory?

My favorite memory has to be creating my own sports show on U-View called "The Halftime Show." It started with a simple idea and then turned into a weekly show that many people enjoy. It was hard work, and there were many hiccups along the way, but I’m impressed with how far it has come. I’m also thrilled that underclassmen want to take over the show once I graduate. It makes me feel like I’m leaving an impression and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

My advice for incoming students is to get involved as quickly as you can and to make friends with the upperclassmen. I asked upperclassmen for help all the time with cover letters, resumes, recommendations, etc. It never hurts to network within your own major. Being involved also helps build your resume for that first internship.
