#PittsburghMe: Meet Photography Major Noah Fodor Student Profile

Why did you choose Point Park University?

I chose Point Park University for its diverse curriculum and range in the mediums they offer classes. The program is rigorous and demands a lot, but it fuels me every day to become the best artist. The skill set I have acquired has given me the ability to create conceptual work that I didn’t realize I had in me a few years ago. So far, Point Park has given me everything I need to become a successful artist, and my professors have become sources of inspiration and influence me as I continue to make work.

What is your favorite genre of photography and why?

My favorite genre of photography is landscape. I’ve always been attracted to the landscape we have built and how it resides today. My awakening to this realization was the New Topographic movement of the American West in the 1970s; photographers such as Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Joe Deal, etc., surveyed the shift in Western America from a pristine landscape to man-made suburbia. I’m interested in how our land has been shaped over the years and how it continues to grow.

Tell us about your experience being featured in a gallery show.

My experience being featured in the Point Park juried show was great. It was almost a surreal experience watching everyone go up to my pieces and spend time with them. I was honored to be able to participate in this event with all my classmates. It was a big accomplishment and it gave a lot meaning to my work. For the first time, I wasn’t just showing my work to classmates for critique. It also really transformed my mindset when thinking about my work; it allowed me to think higher of myself and gave me a lot of gratitude. 

What changes have you noticed in yourself since starting college?

The biggest change in myself that I’ve seen is the ability to manage my time. I’ve especially noticed this since I started taking six courses. I’ve stayed disciplined and keep myself on track. I make a schedule every week and stick to that. I also think that my work has matured, becoming more conceptual than it was when I started at Point Park. 

What advice do you have for incoming students?  

My advice for incoming students is to stay disciplined and make the best work you can. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Also, make time for you. In my opinion, that’s the most important one. Always allow yourself at least an hour for time to relax and give your brain and body some rest. Take care of yourself. Mental and physical health always come first.
