"Point Park has made me career-ready by providing me the opportunity to learn from talented professors with years of experience in my chosen career field. They bring so much knowledge to class from their real-world experiences and prepare us to enter the workforce confidently."
What do you like about Point Park University’s applied computer science program, and what courses have you enjoyed so far?
I love Point Park’s applied computer science program because you can customize your path, and the courses are taught by industry-experienced faculty. There are three different concentrations to choose from – Big Data & Analytics, Software Development and Networking & Security – or you can create your own unique path like I have. The professors are knowledgeable, and they all have relevant real-world experience that they incorporate into classroom discussions. The courses I have enjoyed the most have been Intro to Programming, Advanced Programming and Business Analytics. They have all been very hands-on and interesting.
You’ve added an accounting minor. How has that enhanced your learning experience?
The accounting minor has helped enhance my learning by giving me even more insight into the business side of computer science. It has also helped me familiarize myself with new technology that is useful in computer science careers. I have also gained work experience in the University's tutoring center because of my accounting minor. I am grateful for how much it has helped me expand my education.
What do you like about being in the Honors Program?
The Honors Program is an amazing community. Everyone is supportive, and it is a great way to get to know people outside of your major. The program is how I met some of my closest friends while still learning important lessons for real life. I am the social events coordinator for the Honors Student Organization, which has helped me expand my organizational skills and build my event planning skills.
What other activities or events have you participated in on campus?
I've had the opportunity to participate in lots of activities on campus. I take part in filming and acting for a campus TV show, Late Night S’news, broadcast by U-View. I became the president of the Uno Club (my favorite club). I was chosen as a Pioneer Ambassador to help first-year students adjust to campus life. All these activities, in addition to my role as an accounting tutor, have helped me build stronger relationships with students who I might not have met otherwise.

Which Point Park faculty members have had a significant impact on you?
Two faculty members who have had the biggest impact on me are Amy Kier, academic support coordinator, and Amy Cesario, MBA, CPA, lecturer of accounting. Amy Kier has always been there for me and really every other student on campus. She always makes sure we are on the right track and that we are doing well in school. She deeply cares about how students are doing academically and in day-to-day life. Amy Cesario is an amazing professor who always sees the best in people. She is patient and often goes out of her way to help those who are struggling in her class. She is also the professor who convinced me that an accounting minor would help me in the future.
What do you like about living and learning in Pittsburgh?
I love living and learning in Pittsburgh because it is such a dynamic city. I am lucky to live right between the business district and the cultural district. I also work in the Strip District. Having access to all these different places enhances my learning experience. I have lots of opportunities to experience different work environments, internships and co-ops. Point Park encourages students to gain experience in the real world through the University's countless connections.
How has Point Park made you career-ready?
Point Park has made me career-ready by providing me the opportunity to learn from talented professors with years of experience in my chosen career field. They bring so much knowledge to class from their real-world experiences and prepare us to enter the workforce confidently. Another great resource at the University is the required career preparation class. The staff in the Professional Career Readiness Center work hard in and out of the classroom to help students work toward their goals.
Anything else you would like to add?
Point Park is an incredibly well-balanced school. Some may have the misconception that we are mainly an arts school, but while our Conservatory of Performing Arts is certainly world-renowned, the University also offers many other impressive degree programs. Every program is taught by awesome professors who want to help students succeed.
