"Scraping Away" is from his collection, Argot, which features poems inspired by his years of working in the restaurant industry as well as his teenage years and family relationships.

Shaw teaches writing and literature classes at Point Park and Carlow University, writes book reviews for the Pittsburgh City Paper and has maintained a career in the restaurant industry for more than 25 years.

His former Point Park student Alexa Kennedy said: "Intro to Prose with Fred Shaw has been my favorite course. The material and advice he gave during class has redirected not only my career path, but my habits as a student and person. A professor who causes you to question more than the writing prompt is invaluable.
