Purpose of the Privacy Notice

Point Park University (“University”) engages in interactions with higher education institutions, third-party service providers, and community members who reside in the European Union (“EU”). Our community members may also travel to the EU in fulfillment of the University’s mission. Based on these activities and affiliations, the University must comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) in certain circumstances.

The GDPR requires that the University meets certain standards with regard to data security, data processing, data accuracy, and transparency of data processing activities. The GDPR also gives natural persons certain rights with regard to their personal data held by the University. The purpose of this Privacy Notice is to help educate you about the University’s data processing activities and your rights according to the GDPR.

Information Collected by Point Park University/Use of Information

The University collects and processes, personal data, information and sensitive information (“personal data”) from individuals (“data subjects”) who are students, employees, applicants, and other natural persons only as necessary in the exercise of the University’s legitimate interests, functions and responsibilities as an institution of higher education. The University generally collects personal data through various methods including directly from you (e.g. the online application process), automated processes (e.g. interactions with the University’s website from your personal device or computer), or other third parties for legitimate, specific purposes (e.g. transcripts obtained by the University for admissions purposes).  Personal data can include names, addresses, transcripts, work history, information for payroll, and medical and health information. Personal data collected or processed is primarily used for employment, admission and enrollment, educational programs, including internships with outside employers, study abroad, internship abroad, online education, financial and payment history, provision of medical services and international travel, etc. 

If a data subject refuses to provide personal data that is required by the University in connection with one of the University’s lawful bases to collect the personal data, such refusal may make it impossible for the University to provide education, employment, travel opportunities or other requested services.

Individual Rights under the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The GDPR requires that personal data from the EU be subject to special protection. The GDPR also provides the EU-based individual with certain individual rights with respect to their personal information. These include:

Lawful Basis for Collecting or Processing Personal Data

The University is an institute of higher education engaged in education, training, community engagement and promotion of theater and dance productions. In order for the University to educate and train its students, engage with the community and promote artistic productions, it is necessary and lawful for it to collect, process, use and maintain personal data of its students, employees, applicants, and other natural persons. These lawful bases include, without limitation, admission, registration, delivery of classroom, on-line, and study abroad education, grades, communications, employment, and retention of records.

Lawful reasons for collecting and processing personal data can generally be categorized as follows:

  1. The data subject has given consent to the processing of their personal data for one or more specific purposes;
  2. Processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party or in order to take steps at the request of the data subject prior to entering into a contract;
  3. Processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which the controller is subject.
  4. Process is necessary in order to protect the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person;
  5. Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller;

Cookies

Cookies are files that many websites transfer to users’ web browsers to enable the site to deliver personalized services or to provide persistent authentication. The University’s website uses persistent cookies in conjunction with a third party technology partner to analyze search engine usage and web traffic patterns. Record Retention

All personal and sensitive data collected or processed by the University under the scope of the University’s EU General Data Protection Regulation Compliance program must follow the controls and security measures outlined in the University’s Information Technology Security Policy. Accordingly, the University will not share your information with third parties except where it is necessary to meet one of its lawful purposes, as necessary to protect the University’s interests; or with service providers acting on behalf of the University who have agreed to protect the confidentiality of the personal data.

Survival.
