"As a student, Jim came to Point Park in the midst of a long and successful career in business. We're honored that he thought highly enough of our doctoral program to return to the classroom. Someone with his depth of experience and desire to learn is the perfect type of person to speak to our region's future leaders."
"How will you define success was the key question I asked the students. In addition, I shared three insights on success that I have collected from fellow students, alumni, friends, family, faculty, teachers and business leaders."
What was your key message at the Class of 2018 Hooding ceremony?
How will you define success was the key question I asked the students. In addition, I shared three insights on success that I have collected from fellow students, alumni, friends, family, faculty, teachers and business leaders. (Check out 2018 Graduate Hooding and Commencement photos on Facebook).
Why did you choose Point Park's Ed.D. doctoral program?
The Ed.D. in leadership and administration program balanced my interests in practice and theory. Ironically, I saw a pop-up advertisement for the program when I logged on to pay my son's tuition. He is a 2017 graduate of Point Park's theatre production program.
Discuss your experience as a student in the Ed.D. program.
As a seasoned learner (I began at age 54), I appreciated the cohort learning model that encouraged the exchange of ideas and experience. This program challenged my assumptions and changed the way I think — about leadership, education and myself.
What have you enjoyed most as a part-time instructor at Point Park?
I am a teacher at my core and love the unique interactive exchanges of adult learning. Teaching as a part-time instructor in the Rowland School of Business and Department of Community Engagement graduate programs, my goal is to bring a practical application to each topic I teach (organizational strategy, program design/evaluation, business and research ethics, research methodology).
Who inspired you to become involved with the James Connection in India?
A close friend of mine, while traveling in India, noticed the large number of children on the streets. We discovered there are more children living on the streets in India than there are people who live in California. Working with partners in India, we support the daily physical, educational and emotional needs of 160 children at the Angels' Place Orphanage in Manipur, India.
Tell us about the work you do with the James Connection.
As a director on the board, I have taken a special interest in all educational programming for the children. In my most recent trip to India, we were working to develop vocational/skill training in order to help ensure employability of the children once they leave Angels' Place.
