Why did you choose Point Park University?

I knew that I wanted to go to school in Pittsburgh because my mother is from Bethel Park and most of my family is here. After reviewing my options with my high school science teacher, we found that Point Park had everything I wanted in a school – a small campus, right in the city and hands-on programs that would help me develop as a journalist.

Whenever I am asked why I chose a small liberal arts school, I say that this place feels like home. When I first got here I was scared of the city and I thought that I couldn’t make it. I can even remember calling my mom crying freshman year. After only a few weeks at school, I met some amazing people, talked to excellent professors and got myself involved on campus. Point Park really does feel like my second home, and I think it always will feel that way to me.

**Tell us about your job at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.**

Right now I’m a stringer at the P-G, which means I take phone calls for high school sports and I report the scores and stats. Helen Fallon made me aware of this position and I couldn’t be more thankful to go into the office of a real newspaper and gain professional experience. In addition, I now have some connections in the sports department of the P-G, which will help me when I’m looking for a job. I may be at the bottom of the food chain, but my foot is in the door, and I think this position could lead to something bigger.

Where is your favorite spot in the city?

I cannot lie to you when I say that I have spent over half my free time at Genoa’s Pizza up the street. When I discovered that place during my sophomore year, I thought it was just another pizza joint. Here we are two years later, and Genoa’s is the place where all of my friends and I come together to eat and hang out. It’s close to campus and is such a great atmosphere.

Do you have a favorite Point Park memory?

There are so many that it is almost impossible to choose. Point Park introduced me to so many amazing people and experiences. If I had to say something that stands out the most, it is adventuring around the city with my friends and my girlfriend.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

I cannot stress this enough - do not give up. There are so many times that college will push you to your breaking point, but there will always be someone there to help you. Lean on your friends and family because they are there to support you. Even professors will help, because here at Point Park they want you to succeed. Get involved on campus, make friends and I promise things will work out in the end.
