B. Identify the human characteristics of places and regions by their cultural characteristics.

  • Components of culture (e.g., language and foods).

  • Ethnicity of people in the local community (e.g. celebrations, languages, religions).

Objectives:

The students will be introduced to the Venezuelan culture. The children will be introduced to the art work, the culture of the country, and some customary foods of Venezuela. In addition, the children will be able to recognize that children all around the world are similar, but live in different places. Also, the children will learn some Spanish words such as "Hola" which means "hello", "Me llamo es..." which means "My name is...", and "Chao" which means "good-bye". The children will also learn about the flag of Venezuela and the importance of the flag to its country.

 

Materials:

  • Flag puzzles

  • Venezuela poster

  • Pictures of people, buildings, and animals

  • Food such as a cookie

  • Hammock

  • Art work (wooden fruit, cup, and key holder)

  • Book: World Team by Tim Vyner

  • Classroom rules

  • Decorations for the classroom such as streamers, flags, and a poster

  • Napkins/paper towels and paper plates

  • Paper bags for the children to take their treats home

  • Name tags/passports

  • CD: The Best of Celia Cruz con la Sonora Matancera

 

Procedures:

 

Review: The teachers will review the classroom rules with the students and enlighten the students about what countries they will be learn about. The teachers will lead the children in a discussion about the countries and ask the students if they have ever been to these countries.

 

Introduce: The teacher will introduce the lesson by informing the students that they will be learning about the country of Venezuela. The lesson will be introduced by reading the book World Team by Tim Vyner. After reading the book, the teacher will lead a discussion with the students about the book and how it relates to the country of Venezuela.

 

Develop:

  • The festival will begin by the teachers introducing themselves to the children and briefly telling the students what countries they will be learning about.

  • The teachers will review the classroom rules with the students.

  • The teachers will distribute each child's name tag.

  • The teachers will tell the students that they will be able to visit each country once in whatever order they wish.

  • The lesson will begin with a book World Team by Tim Vyner and asking questions to the children about the book such as:

    • Which sport do the children play?

    • What are some of the countries he visits?

    • What do all the children want to win?

  • Then, the teacher will lead a discussion about the pictures on the Venezuelan poster.

    • The students and the teacher will talk about how the children wear the same types of clothing, how some of their official animals are also in the United States, and how some of the housing is similar to the United States.

  • The teacher will show the wooden and ceramic art work to the children and talk about each.

    • The class will talk about the importance of the art work and how the Venezuelan people make their art work. The teacher will also lead a discussion with the children about the ceramic art work.

  • The teacher will then begin to talk about the hammock, which the children and the teacher will be all sitting upon along with all the other art work and materials.

  • The teacher will introduce the "flag puzzle" activity for the students to take part in.

    • The teacher will give each student a "flag puzzle" in a bag and explain the parts of the flag of Venezuela.

    • The teacher will introduce math by having the students add the number of pieces in their puzzle.

  • The children will then learn about some of the foods from Venezuela.

    • The children will talk about the cookies that they will take home with them and that children love to eat these cookies in Venezuela.

 

Assess: The students will be assessed by the teacher on how well the children can follow the classroom rules. In addition, the teacher will be aware of how much each student participations in discussions. The teacher will ask the children what they have learned about Venezuela and how the country compares to the United States.

 

Close: The teacher will close the lesson about Venezuela by asking the students what they have learned about the country and what was interesting to them. In addition, the teacher will tell the students that even though Venezuela is in South America, they do the same types of things like we do in the United States.
