Getting to Know You

Length of Lesson: 60 minutes
Group Size: 5 students
1.) Learning Objectives:
- Given a story read by the teacher entitled Best Friends, the student will understand the concept of friendship.
- The student will be able to create a picture book based on an understanding of themselves, their likes and dislikes.
- The student will participate in a singing game lead by the teacher in order to get to know the others in the classroom.

Modifications for Students with Special Needs:
-Allow the children extra time to complete the assignment if needed.
-If a child has a vision problem, make sure to seat the student closest to the teacher, especially during story time.
-Inform the children that everyone is excited to meet and become friends with them.

3.) Materials:
-Beaumont, Karen. Being Friends. Illus. by Joy Allen. Dial Books for Young

-Carpet large enough for all students to sit upon
-Construction paper (various colors)
-Pre-made book pages where the students fill in the answer by drawing a
picture to address the following:
-This is my family...
-My favorite hobby is...
-I like to eat...
-My favorite animal is...
-Camera with film
-Yarn
-Multicultural Crayons
-WashableMarkers
-Glue Sticks
4.) Procedures:
- Teachers will introduce themselves to the students and give them an idea of what kind of lesson they will be learning today.
- Students will sit on the carpet and the teacher will go over the classroom rules, rules for good listeners and good speakers.
- Teacher will read the book Being Friends by Karen Beaumont and ask questions about the friendship between the two girls in the story. Before reading, the teacher will tell the students the title of the book and describe to them what an author does and who the author of Being Friends is.
- Teacher will instruct students that it is their time to become an author and "write" their own autobiography.
- Students will be go to the table and begin working on their books.
- During this time, the teacher will be calling the students one by one up to the front of the room and taking their individual picture.
- Once books are constructed, the teacher will have the students and college students come to the carpet. Teacher will ask what kinds of things the students learned new about somebody else and what types of things the students drew.
- To close the lesson, students and college students will form a circle, join hands, and learn the song "Friend of Mine" sung to the tune Mary Had a Little Lamb. When it's the child's turn, they will go to the center of the circle and the rest of the class will dance around them.

Will you be a friend of mine and dance around with me?
(Name) is a friend of mine, friend of mine, friend of mine,
(Name) is a friend of mine, who dances around with me.
- After everyone has had a chance to be in the middle of the circle, the teachers will instruct the students to sit back down on the carpet and tell them that they have ten new friends that look forward to seeing them over the rest of the semester.
5.) Evaluation Methods:
1) At the end of the story the kindergarten students will be asked questions regarding the friendship between the two girls. This will be used to evaluate their understanding of friendship.
2) Each child will be expected to construct an autobiography that will be evaluated by the teacher.
3) The students are expected to participate in the singing game and will be evaluated on their level of involvement and their effort to learn the names of others around them.
