Group Size: 6 children or more
1.) Objectives:
A. Children will be able to recognize the importance of friendship and understanding.
B. Children will be able to identify similar interests and hobbies between themselves, the other students, and college students.
C. Children will become familiar with college students and will be able to recognize them.
D. Children will be able to recognize what makes them special and what makes them unique.
Modification for Gifted or Special Needs Children: We were not made aware of any student that requires special attention, but should the situation come up we will deal with it in the best and most appropriate way possible.
2.) Related Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards:
Early Childhood Learning Continuum Indicators, 1.6 Speaking and Listening, A. Listen in order to understand and follow directions.
PDE Standards: 9.1.3 Know and use the elements and principles or each art form to create works in the arts and humanities.
3.) Materials:
1. Yellow smiley faces
2. Giant smiley face for wall
3. Crayons
4. Pencils
5. Paper bags
6. Multicultural paper
7. Multicultural yarn
8. Multicultural crayons
9. Glue
10. Tape
11. Adult scissors
12. Children's scissors
13. Plain white paper
4.) Procedure:
B. Teacher will read the book, Will You Be My Friend
C. After the book, students will be divided into 3 groups.
D. One group will go to Center one.
E. Center one will be "What makes me happy?"
F. At center one, the college students will ask the kindergarten students what makes them happy.
G. Kindergarten students will then write or draw what makes them happy on the smiley faces.
H. College students can then put the smiley faces on the giant smiley face on the board.
I. Center two will be titled "How do you see me?"
J. At this center the students will draw on plain white paper with pencils, the college students.
K. The college students may draw the kindergarten students as well.
L. Dialogue should take place between the students.
M. The last center is titled, "What makes me unique?"
N. Using brown paper bags and multicultural supplies, the college students and the kindergarten students will create puppets of themselves.
O. The students should share with each other what they like about them selves and what make them unique as a person.
5.) Evaluation:
B. Summary: At the end of the lesson, all of the activities will be talked about and the children will be able to understand how they all relate to each other. The teachers will announce to the children that they all now how have 15 new friends.
Center One: "What makes me Happy?"
College students will then ask the kindergarten students "What makes you happy?"
The college students will either write it down on the smiley face papers or let the kindergarten students write or draw their choices on the papers.
After they are finished the students will then hang their smiley face on the giant smiley face on the wall.
