Position opening: Graduate Assistant - School of Communication

REPORTS TO: Dean, Dr. Bernie Ankney and Chair, Professor Chris Rolinson

Term of appointment: 4 Month Assignment renewable for second year (Fall 2024), beginning with the Spring 2024 semester. 

Salary: $10 per hour (approximately $800 per month up to a maximum of $6,400 per academic year – September through April) plus fully paid tuition and fees. Full-time tuition is for nine graduate credits per term. Room and board, additional tuition charges, books and incidental costs are not included.

Requirements: Undergraduate degree in journalism, mass communication, media studies, or similar degree. Professional and/or student media experience in journalism or mass communication field preferred. Applicants for this assistantship must already have been admitted into the School of Communication M.A. program and must commit to enroll in a minimum of nine (9) credits per semester. The application processes for the graduate program and graduate assistantships are separate. 

Enjoys working in a collaborative environment. Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills. Strong interest in public relations, advertising, communication, social media, event planning, and/or multimedia. Must have expertise using various social media platforms, ability to manage multiple projects at once,
strong writing skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Suite. Experience with shooting and editing photo and video is not required but strongly recommended. Working knowledge of design programs such as Adobe Suite or Canva is a plus.

Primary Functions: Work with the Dean, Chair and other School of Communication staff to collaborate on community/student outreach, event planning, as well as promotion and recruitment initiatives. Collaborate with the Dean on creating and leading communications-related workshops and programming. Produce engaging, professional-quality communications content, videos and social media. Contribute to recruiting undergraduate students. Assist with brainstorming and executing marketing strategies for the School of Communication.

Primary duties:

1. Coordinate School of Communication events on a regular basis, including occasional evening and weekend work.
2. Support social media on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.
3. Design graphics and other collateral for events, collaborating with the Dean’s input.
4. Take photos and videos of classes and events.
5. Help with student recruitment events.
6. Proofread and edit materials.
7. Work on special projects, as needed.
