The Point Park University's School of Communication is hosting a free public screening of the documentary film "Newspaper of Record: The Pittsburgh Courier" at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, at the GRW Theater in University Center. A panel discussion, featuring African-American press scholars, a former Courier reporter, editor of the New Pittsburgh Courier and the film's producer and director will follow the screening.

The Pittsburgh Courier has been called the leading Black newspaper of the 20th century. Going far beyond "journaling" African-American life, the newspaper was considered a muckraking crusader in the vanguard of the civil rights movement.

"This film makes clear that the Courier played a major journalistic role not only in Pittsburgh but also in the nation," said Steven Hallock, director of graduate studies for Point Park's School of Communication who is teaching a course on mass communication history this semester. "It is instructive not only for students of journalism but also for students of history and simply those interested in the culture of journalism, the black press and the civil rights movement."

Featured panelists, who will follow the screening, include:

  • Ohio University Journalism Professor Pat Washburn, author of "The African American Newspaper: Voice of Freedom"
  • Pittsburgh University Professor Laurence Glasco, author of "Legacy in Bricks and Mortar: African-American Landmarks in Allegheny County"
  • Editor and Publisher of the New Pittsburgh Courier Rod Doss
  • Former Courier reporter Patricia P. Jennings
  • Film producer and director Kenneth Love

A public reception with light refreshments will follow. To RSVP by Jan. 17, call 412-392-4759 or via e-mail at pwalck@pointpark.edu.
