Heretic rehearsal at PP prior to Joyce Theater NYC

The Wall Street Journal praised the "...feminine beauty and command of Point Park University's Mikelle Rindflish at the haunting center of Graham's 'Heretic' (1929)."

The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post this month noted Point Park University's selection to perform under the auspices of the Martha Graham Center for Contemporary Dance in New York City.

Point Park's Conservatory of Performing Arts was one of only seven national training programs invited to perform at the Joyce Theater March 14 during a special University Partners event as part of the Martha Graham Dance Company's 86th anniversary season.

The Point Park University students performed the reconstructed Heretic, a masterpiece of American dance originally conceived by legendary choreographer and dancer Martha Graham. Diane Gray restaged and directed the work.

"For our students to be invited and to perform a work of such stature reflects extremely well on Point Park's modern dance program," says Judith Leifer, associate professor and rehearsal director for production.

Robert Greskovic, who covers dance for the Wall Street Journal, specifically praised the " ... feminine beauty and command of Point Park University's Mikelle Rindflish at the haunting center of Graham's 'Heretic' (1929)," in his March 20 article "Martha Graham Made Young Again."

Rindflish, the soloist, danced with 12 other women from the Conservatory of Performing Arts at the Joyce Theater.

"It was such a joy to watch our dancers rise to the occasion in a Graham work, in New York City, onstage at the Joyce-with the Graham company," said Susan Stowe, chair of the department of dance. "My heartfelt congratulations to the dancers-and to all who teach, accompany and support our students every day."

The Huffington Post's "The Global Search for Education: Where Is the Next Martha Graham?" on March 12 also noted Point Park's participation in the Joyce Theater event.

A second group of Point Park students will perform Heretic in Pittsburgh duringConservatory Dance Company at the Byham April 19-21.
