"Jazlyn is a dedicated athlete who always works hard to bring out the best in herself and her teammates. She understands the importance of having a balance between academics and athletics. It's tough to excel in both departments, but Jazlyn is a great role model when it comes to succeeding on the court AND in the classroom."

Shiloh Simonson, Point Park University assistant volleyball coach

"Being a student athlete is an honor because I represent Point Park University not only as a student, but as an athlete. Playing in front of students, faculty, my family and friends is a feeling that is indescribable. Bringing home a national title(s) is what I want to be able to do in my four years at this university."

What’s it like to be a student athlete at Point Park University?

It is an honor to be a student athlete at Point Park University for many reasons. To be able to wear Point Park volleyball apparel around campus makes me feel proud. I am lucky to have received a scholarship to play the sport I love. Not only do I feel proud to wear volleyball apparel around campus and in the community, I am also proud to say this is where I play volleyball.

Who inspired your passion for volleyball?

I will never forget being younger and attending volleyball games, tournaments and practices with my mom and sister day in and day out. I played just for fun in the gym with my sister until I started to understand the game more and more. At the time I was very involved with basketball and was torn between playing both. I decided to try out for volleyball in middle school and made the team, and from then on I continued to play while balancing softball and basketball.

As I got to high school the demand for sports got harder, so I only stuck with basketball and volleyball. I had to make a decision between doing AAU basketball or club volleyball, and I decided my sophomore year of high school that I wanted to quit playing basketball all together and primarily focus on volleyball. I think every day about how if I did not make that decision where I would be currently.

To this day, I am proud to say that volleyball was and still is the sport that I love to play. My mom attended Point Park University for business management and volleyball and is now in the Class of 2008 Hall of Fame. Therefore, I have some big shoes to fill. I cannot thank my mom enough for introducing me to the sport that I love.

Why did you decide to major in sports, arts and entertainment management?

I originally was going to major in communications. I grew up playing and watching sports and I really wanted to be the next Erin Andrews. I wanted to be a sports broadcaster that would eventually make it on ESPN one day. As I got older and was going to be starting my freshman year at Point Park University, I realized that being in front of the camera 24/7 was not for me, but I knew I wanted to stay within the sports industry.

I researched the sports, arts and entertainment management major and realized this was the perfect fit. I decided sports was the main avenue I was going to be taking and I wanted to work with a sports team in one way or another. I have a strong interest in making negotiations with people, and trying to sell products, so I knew marketing was the right fit for me, and realized that sports marketing was really where I wanted to focus.

What advice do you have for high school students considering playing collegiate-level sports?

My advice is to be yourself. First and foremost, do not try and change the way you are just for a team to want to recruit you. Continue to be the same player you were before you were being recruited and follow the same routines. Furthermore, attend as many showcases and camps as possible to get more exposure. Lastly, sit down with your parents or guardians and make a pros and cons list of schools you are interested in and reach out to the coaches at those schools. You may feel timid at first to reach out, but it will show that you are dedicated and are serious about pursuing playing sports at the next level.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are to finish Point Park University in 2021. By then, I hope to have had an internship with a collegiate or professional sports team within the marketing industry to broaden my horizon within sports and add this to my resume. If I have a set job as a marketing coordinator for a sports team and they are willing to pay for me to get my master’s in business administration I would not hesitate. I have an open mind regarding moving to where I would get hired whether it be in Texas, Florida or staying in Pittsburgh.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I am so happy I chose to come to Point Park University and cannot wait to say this is where I graduated from! The professors, coaches, and students make this place feel like home. It makes me proud to say I am from Pittsburgh! Go Pioneers!
