Student Journalists Receive First-Place Awards at Annual Conference.

Point Park University's independent student-managed newspaper, The Globe, won four Mark of Excellence Awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 4 Spring Conference, held at The Ohio State University, April 4-5.

"Six of our students had a great time at the conference. Region 4 is the largest in the country and Point Park took home more awards in the small school range than any other school in our category," said Aimee-Marie Dorsten, Ph.D., assistant professor of journalism and mass communication and adviser to The Globe.

The first-place winning entries and finalists include:

  • First place: Jane McAnallen (public relations and advertising major), "Ghosts haunt downtown pizza place," feature writing category;
  • First place: Mia Rupani (double major in journalism and broadcasting reporting), Johanna Wharran (journalism major), Nick Vercilla (journalism major), "9/11 remembered, not respected," "Your vote is your voice," "Where's Luke?," editorial writing category;
  • Category finalist: Zachary Weiss (double major in journalism and mass communication), "Volleyball hits sour note," sports writing category; and
  • Category finalist: Connor Mulvaney (photojournalism major), "Inauguration," general news category.

First place winners will move on to the national competition held in September in Tennessee.
