Why did you decide to attend Point Park?

I decided to attend Point Park because of the SAEM major. I was drawn to that specific major because I would ideally like to get into either the sports or entertainment industry. The SAEM program offers many in-class and out-of-class opportunities to gain real-life experience and network with professionals in the Pittsburgh area. This is possible because of Point Park’s convenient location in Downtown Pittsburgh.

How did you land your summer internship with the Pittsburgh Pirates?

I knew that I would be living close to Downtown this summer, so I decided to apply for the Pirates’ media relations internship through the website careers.pirates.com. I hoped that my past experience as a media relations intern for the Pittsburgh Penguins would be enough to get an interview. Thankfully, it was. I began my summer internship with the Pirates on April 1.

What are your key internship responsibilities?

This internship is strictly game-day oriented so it is my (along with the media relations department) responsibility to make sure that everything is prepared in the press box for the media. This includes compiling and printing off game notes for each team as well as individual stat packs. During the game, we update the news media with important statistics that they can use on-air. After the game, we record Clint Hurdle’s post-game press conference and record player interviews in the locker room. Finally, I assist with photos and stories for the Pirates and Major League Baseball’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) so they have content to post for fans to see.

Please discuss your previous internship and SAEM-related work experiences.

This past fall I interned for the Pittsburgh Penguins as a media relations intern. My job duties were very similar to what I do at the Pirates with the exception that we also compiled in-game notes for the media. At the conclusion of my internship in December, the Penguins hired me part time to work game nights for this season.

I also worked as the printing coordinator for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft held at the CONSOL Energy Center. In addition, I worked as the final stats coordinator for the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, which just concluded a few weeks ago.

What’s been your favorite class at Point Park so far and why?

My favorite class so far has been “Sport, Arts and Entertainment Marketing and Promotion.” In the class, we got the opportunity to pitch our marketing plans to the marketing director for the band Rise Against. Overall, I learned a ton of great things in that class that directly applied to what I’ve done at my internships.

What are your career goals?

Ideally, I would like to get a job in sports, either in baseball or hockey, but honestly, I will take whatever I can get. I believe I have done a good job of getting my foot in the door (at least in Pittsburgh) so hopefully I will be able to find a career doing what I love.
