PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University women's soccer team swept the KIAC weekley awards for Sept. 9-15, 2013 with junior midfielder Kari Kowalski being named the KIAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and junior defender Angie Abel being named the KIAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Point Park (3-4, 2-0 KIAC) had things covered offensively and defensively this past week with Kowalski and Abel playing big roles. The highlight of the week came Friday and Saturday when the Pioneers beat KIAC opponents Berea (Ky.) and Midway (Ky.) at home by a combined score of 5-0.
Kowalski, a three-year starter at center midfield and a native of Harrison, Ohio, scored a big goal in both victories. She scored off a corner kick to give Point Park a 1-0 halftime lead in the 3-0 win over Berea. The tally ended up being the game-winning goal. In the win over Midway, Kowalski gave Point Park a comfortable, 2-0 lead in the second half.
Abel, a Baltimore, Md., native who has started at center defense all three years, controlled things defensively for Point Park as the Pioneers didn't allow many opportunities. The back line allowed only one shot attempt versus Berea and only six shots versus Midway as Abel ended any many chances.
Point Park will look to even its record at .500 in its next game at Geneva on Wednesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Beaver Falls, Pa.
