PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University freshman center Sam Weir is once again the KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 16-22, the conference announced on Monday (Dec. 23). The 6-0 center from Ellwood City, Pa., and Riverside High School had another big week of 21.0 points, 14.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game in two victories for the Pioneers.

Weir, who is averaging 15.3 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 3.5 bpg, won the award for the third time in the seven weeks that it has been given out this season. Her stellar play kept NAIA Division II No. 21 Point Park (12-0, 2-0 KIAC) as one of only three remaining unbeaten teams in the country.

Weir racked up 41 points, 29 rebounds and 11 blocks in the two games last week while shooting 53 percent from the field and 71 percent from the foul line.

Her biggest game of the week came in a matchup of local, unbeaten teams Dec. 17 when she totaled 26 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks in a n 84-70 victory at La Roche. Weir had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks by halftime, which sent the Pioneers on their way to opening up a 25-point lead in the second half.

Weir followed that up with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in a home win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene Dec. 19. She battled foul trouble that limited her to nine minutes the first half but ended up surpassing her season averages in points, rebounds and blocks as the Pioneers improved to 12-0 overall.

Weir ranks second in NAIA Division II in blocks per game (3.5) and seventh in rebounds per game (10.8). Her field-goal percentage of .544 is 23rd in the nation.

Point Park has had five of the seven KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honorees so far this year. Besides Weir three times, Katresa Savisky (Nov. 4) and Kayla Kiriau (Dec. 16) are other Pioneers to get the recognition.

The Pioneers and Weir are off the the Christmas holiday before getting back into action Jan. 4-5 at Indiana Southeast and Brescia (Ky.) for a pair of KIAC road games.
