PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University freshman center Samantha Weir has been selected the KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 11-17. The 6-0 center from Ellwood City, Pa., and Riverside High School averaged 17.5 points. 14.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game in two games last week as Point Park (5-0) went 2-0.
Weir had two strong games, but none was bigger than her 21 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks in a 77-62 home win over NCAA Division II Daemen on Nov. 16. Weir was eight off the Point Park record for rebounds in a game and set a career high in points and rebounds.
That huge performance came one night after she totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and six blocks in just 17 minutes of action in a 73-52 home win over Penn State-Greater Allegheny Nov. 15. Weir started both games, and she has been in the starting lineup for the last three games.
Weir, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds in her first start of the year Nov. 9 at Mt. Vernon Nazarene, is averaging 12.4 ppg, 10.0 rpg and shooting 58% from the field.
Weir signed with NCAA Division II Seton Hill out of high school, but she did not play any games there as a freshman. She transferred to Point Park this year as a freshman with four years of eligibility left.
Weir and the Pioneers are 5-0 for the first time ever and next play at home on Tuesday (Nov. 19) versus Penn State-Fayette.
