Point Park women start KIAC road trip by stifling Berea in 62-41 victory

BEREA, Ky. -- The Point Park University women's basketball team built on its resume as the best defensive team in the KIAC with Friday night's 62-41 smashing at Berea (Ky.) College.
The Pioneers (14-4, 7-3 KIAC) gave up a season-low 41 points and held Berea (4-12, 0-3 KIAC) to 26-percent shooting in the rout. Point Park was ahead, 11-0, after 1:49 as April Austin hit a 3-pointer and fed Emily Schartner for two others.
Point Park built a 21-4 lead with 12:55 left in the first half and did not let Berea out of single digits for the first nine minutes.
The Pioneers lead the KIAC in scoring defense at 59.7 ppg and also are tops in the league in field-goal percentage defense at 36.8 percent. Friday was no different as Berea was held to 15 for 58 from the field, including 7 of 34 (20 percent) the second half.
Point Park was up, 30-19, at the half and ended any hopes Berea had by starting the second half on a 12-2 run for their biggest lead of 21 points, 42-21, with 15:34 left.
Schartner had a game-high 14 points on 3 of 7 from long range. Forward Ja'Nia McPhatter added 11 points and 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double in 17 games.
Austin, the Pioneers' point guard, totaled nine points, nine assists, four steals and just two turnovers. Katresa Savisky chipped in eight points, five rebounds and three steals.
Berea had 11 points from Mikola Burks and 10 off the bench from Malena Steve.
Point Park continues its four-day road trip to Kentucky with Saturday's date at Midway (Ky.) College. Game time is 4 p.m. The trip concludes Sunday vs. St. Louis College of Pharmacy (12 p.m.) at neutral site Midway.
