PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University senior guard Emily Schartner was named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2012, the league announced on Monday (Dec. 3).
Schartner is a 5-11 guard from Finleyville, Pa., and Ringgold High School. She is the first Point Park women's basketball player to earn a KIAC Player of the Week honor with the Pioneers in the new conference this year.
Schartner was the key player in Point Park (6-2, 2-1 KIAC) coming away with a 2-0, weekend road trip within the conference last weekend.
She had career highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds in the Pioneers' 74-69, double-overtime win at KIAC preseason favorite IU Southeast on Friday night. Schartner made 5 of 10 treys -- including 4 of 6 in the second half and overtime -- to lead the Pioneers in erasing a 30-17 halftime deficit.
Schartner followed that up the next day with 18 points in a gutsy win at Brescia, 77-72. A 97-percent free-throw shooter, she sank a pair late to seal the victory. More information about the Brescia will be known once it becomes available.
Schartner transferred last year from NJIT and is averaging 16.4 ppg in eight games so far this season. She was the AMC Newcomer of the Year last season.
The Pioneers' next game is Friday night versus non-conference Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Tip off at CCAC-South is 7 p.m.
