Austin named AMC Player of the Week for record-setting performance
Jan. 4, 2011
PITTSURGH -- Point Park University's April Austin has been named the American Mideast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 after her 26 points and a school-record eight 3-pointers Dec. 30 vs. Rio Grande.
In Point Park's only game of the week, Austin set a season-high for points on the strength of going 8 for 9 from 3-point range. The eight treys broke the previous Point Park record of six that she shared with three other players.
Austin was 8 of 11 from the field overall and had five assists to lead Point Park to an 83-55 dismantling of a 10-win Rio Grande team in that game.
Austin leads Point Park in scoring (11.9 ppg), assists (3.7 apg) and steals (2.9 spg). She also adds 3.8 rebounds per game and is among the NAIA DII leaders in steals per game.
The native of Penn Hills, Pa., has 144 career 3-pointers, which is just one shy of tying the Point Park career 3-point mark. She needs one more to tie Brittney Wilson. In addition to her single-game record set last week, she also holds the Point Park single-season record with the 65 treys she hit as a freshman in 2009-10.
