Point Park gets first AMC win versus Notre Dame

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. – The Point Park women’s basketball team earned its first American Mideast Conference victory Saturday in a 76-71 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) at CCAC South Gymnasium.
Point Park (7-9 overall, 1-6 AMC) snapped a five-game losing streak and won for the first time in seven AMC games. Notre Dame (15-7, 5-2) dropped its second straight conference game after opening league play with a 5-0 record.
Point Park snapped a 12-game losing streak to Notre Dame and beat the Falcons at CCAC South Gymnasium for the first time.
Ashleigh Hays (Pleasant Hills/Thomas Jefferson) led four Point Park players in double figures with 16 points, and the senior forward added nine rebounds.
Terrica Jones (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) scored 14 points and registered her third double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds.
Brittney Wilson (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) tallied 11 points and six rebounds while Ashley Henderson (Greensburg/Greensburg Central Catholic) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
Notre Dame’s Ashley Carney scored a game-high 28 points with 18 coming in the second half. Yvette Hunter added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and her layup gave Notre Dame a 19-12 lead with 13:16 left in the first half.
In what was a game of runs, Point Park mounted a 9-0 run that was capped off by Henderson’s 3-pointer to put the Pioneers ahead, 21-19, at the 9:08 mark of the first half. But Notre Dame responded with a 14-2 spurt for a 10-point lead, 33-23, five minutes later.
Point Park held Notre Dame scoreless the final 4:18 of the half to trim the lead to 33-31 at halftime.
Jamie Henry, who had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Falcons, nailed a jumper to put Notre Dame ahead, 45-35, with 16:53 left. Then Hays keyed a 10-2 Point Park run with two inside baskets to put the Pioneers within 47-45 with 12:50 to go.
After Carney hit a 3-pointer for a 60-56 Notre Dame lead, Point Park went on a 9-0 run for a 65-60 lead with 6:05 remaining. The spurt included three inside buckets by Jones and was capped off by a 3-pointer from Marissa Reinhard (Plum/Plum). Heather Swedish (Sewickley/Avonworth) had three of her season-high six assists during the run.
A pair of 3-pointers by Carney and an old-fashioned three-point play by Henry gave Notre Dame a 69-68 edge at the 3:18 mark. Henderson hit a jumper on Point Park’s next possession, and two free throws by Swedish gave the Pioneers a 72-69 lead with 2:22 to play.
Point Park led the rest of the game after making 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch. The Pioneers held Notre Dame to 0-for-4 shooting and forced four turnovers the final 1:42.
Point Park forced 17 turnovers and held the Falcons to 35-percent (24-for-69) shooting. The Pioneers led in rebounding, 52-41. Point Park shot 41 percent (28-for-69) including 48 percent the second half.
Point Park welcomes Carlow Tuesday for an AMC game at 7 p.m. The Pioneers defeated the Celtics, 64-54, for their first victory of the season in an AMC crossover game Nov. 18.
