No. 2 Shawnee State tops Point Park

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Point Park women’s basketball team lost to No. 2 Shawnee State, 92-57, in an American Mideast Conference game Wednesday.

Shawnee State (16-0 overall, 2-0 AMC) ended the first half on a 9-1 run for a 40-28 halftime lead and scored the first 11 points of the second half for a 23-point lead with 17:05 to play.

The Bears, who have been ranked second in NAIA Division II in the last two polls, forced 24 turnovers with 17 of those coming in the second half.

Point Park (6-6, 0-3) lost an AMC game for the second straight day. The Pioneers lost, 78-66, at Rio Grande Tuesday.

Point Park did not have a player score in double figures and shot 30 percent (20-for-67) from the field. Ashley Bergman (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) scored a team-high nine points off the bench while Brittney Wilson (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) and Katy Auth (Bellevue/Northgate) had eight points each.

The Pioneers led in rebounding, 50-47, and Terrica Jones (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) had a team-high nine rebounds.
Shawnee State scored 46 bench points led by Shy Johnson (16 points) and Abby Ballman (13). Allison Meyer paced the starters with 16 points.

The Bears had 24 assists on 32 field goals and shot 46 percent (32-for-70) from the field.

Shawnee State took an 8-2 lead in the early going, but Point Park battled back to get within 15-11 on a jumper by Wilson at the 12:26 mark of the first half.

The Bears opened up a 27-17 edge four minutes later, but the Pioneers cut the deficit to 31-27 on Jones’ jumper with 3:53 left before halftime.

Shawnee State then scored 20 of the next 21 points to lead 51-28 with 17:05 left in the game. The Pioneers got as close as 20, 56-36, with 13:01 to play.

Point Park visits Walsh Tuesday for an AMC game at 6 p.m. Walsh is 8-7 overall and 2-0 in the AMC.
