Pioneers drop season opener to Bluefield (Va.), Austin scores 19 points

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The Point Park University women's basketball team lost its season opener to Bluefield (Va.), 76-63, Friday in the first round of the Bevo Francis Tournament hosted by Rio Grande.
Point Park (0-1) trailed 37-26 at halftime and cut the deficit to one point with less than eight minutes to play. But the Pioneers could not overcome 29 turnovers as Bluefield improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Pioneers will play the consolation game Saturday at 11 a.m. Point Park will face the loser of the other first-round game between Midway (Ky.) and the host team, Rio Grande.
Point Park's April Austin (Penn Hills/North Catholic) scored 19 points and tallied six assists in her first career game. Austin (at left) is a freshman point guard who finished up her all-state high school career at North Catholic after the 2006-07 season.
Joining Austin in double figures were senior guard Brittney Wilson (West Mifflin/West Mifflin), who had 10 points and five rebounds, and sophomore forward Terrica Jones (West Mifflin/West Mifflin), who added 10 points.
The Pioneers shot 41 percent (24-for-58) from the field and were outrebounded, 39-35. Point Park was led in rebounding by Marissa Reinhard (Plum/Plum), who grabbed nine boards.
Joncelyn Peterkin (West Mifflin/West Mifflin), a 6-2 sophomore center who transferred from Carlow, totaled five blocks in her first game at Point Park.
Bluefield, which like Point Park is a member of NAIA Division II, shot 47 percent (28-for-60) from the field. The Rams are in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Heather Farrell was Bluefield's only player in double figures with 14 points. The Rams committed 23 turnovers.
