Point Park beats Houghton on Senior Day to set record for wins in a season

PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University volleyball team swept visiting Houghton College, 3-0, on Senior Day Friday and set a program record with its 33rd victory of the season. The match took place at the on-campus Student Center Gym on the Blvd. of the Allies.
With the win, Point Park (33-5, 9-1 AMC) is guaranteed at least a share of the American Mideast Conference regular season title and will take the top seed into the conference playoff tournament that it is hosting Nov. 8.
Point Park won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-8 after putting together a very-impressive hitting percentage of .475. The Pioneers had 43 kills and only five errors in 80 attack attempts.
The Pioneers have concluded their regular-season schedule, and they were a perfect 10-0 in home matches. That record includes 3-0 in the Student Center Gym. Point Park lost only one set at home all year long.
Point Park's 33 wins this year are one more than the previous record set by the 2009 team that was 32-8. The 2009 team amassed 30 wins in the regular season before winning twice on its wy to the AMC Tournament Finals.
The Pioneers honored for Senior Day middle hitter Rachel Stedina, from South Beaver, Pa., and Cassandra Maxwell, from Burgettstown, Pa. Stedina ranks 11th in the country in blocks per set, and Maxwell is a defensive/serving specialst who is a key reserve.
Stedina had a nice day Friday with six kills and zero errors in 11 attempts to go along with five blocks. Maxwell saw action as a serving specialist with one error in seven attempts.
Lindsey Oberacker posted a team-high 11 kills, and Brittany Lhota was close behind with nine kills and just one error in 14 attacks. Brigette Jones added six kills, Stedina had six and setter Tayler Pugliese added five kills and 33 assists.
Houghton fell to 6-23 overall with the loss to Point Park. The Highlanders then traveled to Carlow Friday night for its final AMC match, a contest that determined the final conference playoff spot. Carlow (1-9 AMC) beat Houghton (1-9 AMC) and will be Point Park first-round opponent in next week's AMC Tournament hosted by the Pioneers.
The AMC Tournament schedule includes the first semifinal at 12 p.m. followed by the second semi at 2 p.m. The championship match is at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and Free with Point Park Student ID. The location is the Student Center Gym.
