Pioneers split, Zietak reaches milestone on Day 1 of Shawnee State Tournament
Aug. 27, 2010
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The Point Park University volleyball team split two matches Friday on the first day of the Shawnee State Tournament, and senior middle hitter Ashley Zietak reached a career milestone for the Pioneers.
Point Park (2-1) opened the day with a 3-0 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (0-3) as Zietak (pictured) tallied nine kills and four blocks. With that performance, the senior from Pittsburgh surpassed the 1,000-kill milestone for her career. Later in the night, Zietak chipped in six kills in a 3-0 loss at host Shawnee State, and she has 1,009 kills in all.
Zietak, a graduate of Brashear High School, is the third Point Park player to surpass the 1,000-kill plateau in the last two years. She joins fellow senior captain Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) and the since-graduated Megan Lamens, who each accomplished the feat in 2009.
Point Park swept Lindsey Wilson by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-19.
Shawnee State is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA preseason poll, and the host Bears dispatched the Pioneers, 25-15, 25-18, 25-21. Shawnee State won the American Mideast Conference last year with a record of 31-6 overall and 12-0 in the league. But the Bears are no longer in the same conference as Point Park as they have joined the NAIA Mid-South Conference starting this year. Shawnee State was 18-0 at home in 2009.
Zietak is a four-year starter for the Pioneers and a two-time All-AMC performer. She was limited to 19 matches last season due to injury, but she still averaged 10 kills per match and totaled 195 kills on the year. Her career high of 448 kills came as a freshman in 2007 when she was the AMC North Freshman of the Year.
Point Park finishes up play at the Shawnee State tourney by facing West Virginia Tech (10 a.m.) and former AMC rival Northwestern Ohio (12 p.m.) on Saturday.
Senior captain Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) tallied eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks in the victory over Lindsey Wilson. Zoe Hughes (Butler/Knoch) chipped in eight kills and three blocks while Lindsey Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) had four kills and five digs.
Freshman setter Kyleigh Whitsel (Sheffield Lake, Ohio/Brookside) recorded 17 assists and eight digs, and Margaret Gillooly (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) totaled a team-high 12 digs.
Versus Shawnee State, Roddy led the way with 11 kills and seven digs. Oberacker added seven kills and five digs, and Katie Geary (Pittsburgh/Shaler) had 18 assists. Defensively, Gillooly, Amanda Ardinger (Moon Twp./Moon Area) and Alyssa Hall (Moon Two./Moon Area) combined for 21 digs.
Lindsey Wilson was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to finish third in the Mid-South Conference West Division. Shawnee State was predicted to win the Mid-South Conference East Division.
