All-state outside hitter Burkes commits to Point Park

Jan. 31, 2009

Point Park volleyball coach Mike Bruno inked the first member of his 2009 recruiting class earlier this week. Kirsten Burkes, an all-state right side hitter from Montour, will be a freshman at Point Park for the 2009 season.

Bruno, who is in his fifth season at Point Park, is very pleased to add Burkes to his squad.

“We are very excited to add Kirsten to the Point Park volleyball program,” said Bruno. “She will bring a lot to the team, and I feel that she will make a smooth transition to the college game.”

Burkes, who is 5-10, earned all-state and all-WPIAL honors while playing for the Montour High School volleyball team. Burkes is a two-time WPIAL all-section performer, and she played club ball for Pittsburgh Three Rivers, of which Bruno is the director.

Point Park had an overall record of 19-18 in 2008 and was 7-7 in the American Mideast Conference. The Pioneers missed the AMC playoffs by one game. Point Park had six players graduate from last year’s team.
