PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University has drawn the No. 1 seed in the 2012 American Mideast Conference Softball Tournament April 26-28. The double-elimination event will be hosted by Carlow University, the No. 2 seed, at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Twp., Pa.
Point Park (24-22, 11-3 AMC) was originally scheduled to play Fisher (0-41, 0-14 AMC) in the first round of the AMC Tournament on Thur., April 26. But Fisher, from Boston, Mass., has opted not to come to the postseason tournament. So, Point Park's first tournament game will not be until Fri., April 27 at 12 p.m.
Point Park will await the winner of the tournament's opening game, which pits No. 2 seed Carlow (26-11, 8-6 AMC) vs. No. 3 seed Houghton (N.Y.) (4-28, 4-10 AMC) on Thur., April 26 at 8 p.m.
The losers of the first two tournament games will play an elimination game on Fri., April 27 at 2 p.m.
Only two teams will be left by Sat., April 28, and the championship round is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. If necessary, another game will be played at 3 p.m. to determine a conference champion.
Point Park and Carlow are the favorites in the tournament, and Point Park swept all four regular-season meetings from its cross-town rival. Although the Pioneers won all four, each game was closely contested.
Point Park won a pair of two-run ball games at home April 10, 2-0 and 9-7. Then the Pioneers pulled out two dramatic wins at Carlow April 17. Point Park erased a 5-0 deficit with six runs in the sixth inning to win the opener, 6-5, and then won the second game, 1-0, in nine innings.
The AMC Tournament champion does not receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship because the conference falls short of the required six teams for an invite. Instead, the league is joining with the GCAC, which has only three teams, in forming an Unaffiliated Group.
The winner of the AMC Softball Tournament will advance to the Unaffiliated Group Tournament May 4-6 in Troutville, Va. There, the AMC champion will meet the champion of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in a best-of-3 series, with the winner qualifying for the NAIA National Championship May 17-23 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
