Zelenka named AMC Softball Pitcher of the Week for near perfect game
May 9, 2011
PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University senior Kristen Zelenka was named the AMC Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played April 25-May 1, the last week of the regular season. The announcement came from the AMC office late last week on May 6.
Zelenka won the award based on her near-perfect game versus Notre Dame (OH) April 28. Zelenka, a senior right-hander from Washington, Pa., carried a perfect game through 6.2 innings of a 1-0 victory over the first-place Falcons.
Zelenka yielded only a two-out base hit in the seventh and faced only 22 batters in the seven-inning complete game. That outing included five strikeouts, one walk and no runs. Only two batted balls left the infield versus Zelenka, who lost the perfect game when she issued a walk with two outs in the seventh.
That victory earned Point Park a share of the AMC Regular Season title, the first in school history. On the week, she had nine strikeouts and two walks in 11 innings.
For the year, Zelenka was 7-2 with a 2.51 ERA. In 86.1 innings, she struck out 62 and walked 16. The Trinity High School product was particularly good in conference play with a 6-0 record and 36 strikeouts compared to six walks in AMC games.
For her three-year career at Point Park, Zelenka has a record of 22-15 with 206 strikeouts and 62 walks. Zelenka has a 2.27 ERA in 274.1 career innings. She came to Point Park as a sophomore transfer from Fairmont State for her sophomore year.
