PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University had four players named 2011 Daktronics NAIA Softball Scholar-Athletes as announced by the NAIA on Tuesday. Nicole Kerestine, Abbie Heigel, Zoe Hughes and Kristen Zelenka received the award, which is given to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honor is the highest academic award given out by the NAIA. There were 326 softball players who earned the recognition this year. Kerestine is a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete while Heigel, Hughes and Zelenka got the award for the first time.
Kerestine, a senior outfielder from Brownsville, Pa., had a team-best 3.97 GPA as an English major. She hit .283 as a senior and batted .300 for her career.

Hughes is an outfielder from Butler, Pa., who owns a 3.61 GPA in intelligence and national security. This past season was to be her junior season, but it was lost to injury when she hurt her knee as a member of the Point Park volleyball team in the fall. Hughes hit .319 as the starting center fielder her first two years.
Zelenka, a native of Washington, Pa., is a senior pitcher with a 3.53 GPA in advertising and public relations. Zelenka was first-team All-AMC and the AMC Softball Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 7-2 record and a 2.51 ERA this season.
