Point Park softball finishes FL trip at 5-4 after going 2-1 on Friday
March 11, 2011
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Point Park University softball team won one of two games Friday at the Rebel Spring Games to finish its Florida trip with a 5-4 record. The Pioneers opened with morning victories over Culver-Stockton (MO), 10-6, and Ave Maria (FL), 6-3. Point Park ended the day with a tough, 3-2 loss to NAIA #14 Marian (IN) Friday night.
The two morning victories were a welcome sight for a Point Park team that had mixed results its first six games of the trip. The Pioneers were 3-3 and had scored just 11 runs in those six games before erupting for a season-high 10 runs in the win over Culver-Stockton (2-5).
After the win over Ave Maria, Point Park took an early, 2-1 lead over the nationally ranked Marian squad. But the Knights (6-1), who were 42-6 last year, got their second solo home run of the night to tie things up at 2-2. Later, consecutive doubles gave Marian the lead for good, 3-2, after four innings.
Point Park opened the trip by splitting doubleheaders on each of the first three days. Point Park was scheduled to play a total of 10 games, but ended up playing only nine as rain caused both of its Thursday games to be cancelled. One of those games, the matchup with Marian, was able to be rescheduled for Friday while the other was not.
Point Park hosts La Roche for its home openers Wednesday. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Lind Field at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Twp, Pa.
