McDERMOTT, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's golf team placed third of eight teams at the Shawnee State Invitational this weekend as it competed in the first of seven tournaments this spring. The Pioneers turned in a final-round 323 Saturday to drop back to third place.
Point Park had a team score of 302 in Friday's first round, which put them in second place and five shots back of eventual-champion Cedarville after 18 holes. But Austin Elder was the only Point Park player to break 80 in the final round as the Pioneers fell off the pace. The team score of 323 was the second-highest for the Pioneers this year.
Cedarville was the team champion with a two-day total of 602. The Yellow Jackets, also of the American Mideast Conference like Point Park, had rounds of 297-305. Spring Arbor (304-312) placed second at 616, nine shots ahead of Point Park. Host Shawnee State was one shot behind Point Park at 626 and in fourth place.
Elder shot 3-over 75 in both rounds, and his score of 150 put him in fifth place individually. Alex Bernardini (75-80) placed in a tie for 11th at 155, and James Daley (74-83) finished tied for 14th at 157.
Point Park resumes tournament play March 28 at the Westminster Invitational. Point Park placed second in the Titans' tournament during the fall season.
