Hot-shooting first half carries Roberts Wesleyan to victory over Point Park, 93-78

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan shot 64 percent and scored 54 points the first half on its way to a 93-78 victory over visiting Point Park in an American Mideast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday.

Point Park (9-16, 5-11 AMC) fell behind, 54-40, at halftime of its season finale. Roberts Wesleyan (16-11, 9-7) made 23 of 36 field goals the first half and led by 18 on two occasions the opening 20 minutes.

Point Park mounted a comeback to trim the deficit down to 69-64 on a 3-pointer by Joel Cashatt (Stockton, Calif./Jim Elliott Christian) with 12:20 remaining. But the Raiders held Point Park to just four points over the next six minutes and used an 18-4 run to extend the lead to 19 points, 87-68, with 6:02 left.

Roberts Wesleyan, which won the first meeting of the season, 85-69, at Point Park, had a chance to make the AMC tournament entering Saturday’s game. But since Daemen improved to 9-7 by clobbering Houghton, Daemen takes the third-and-final playoff spot in the AMC North Division because of its 2-0 record versus Roberts Wesleyan.

Cashatt, a junior guard, led the Pioneers with 17 points, and he made 4 of 10 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. The Stockton, Calif., native earned his third start of the year Saturday.

Point Park’s T.J. Heatherington (McKeesport/Serra Catholic) finished off his outstanding freshman season with 15 points and nine assists. The 5-10 point guard ended the season with averages of 15.9 points and 5.9 assists per game. He entered Saturday’s game ranking sixth in NAIA Division II in assists per game.

Junior guard/forward Eric Johnson (Uniontown/Uniontown) added 11 points, and senior center Gerald Warrick (Penn Hills/Penn Hills) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

Warrick ended up as Point Park’s second-leading scorer and top rebounder at 14.9 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-7 Warrick had to sit out the first semester after transferring from Edinboro, but he posted nine double-doubles in 15 games the second half of the year. Warrick snapped a streak of five-straight double-doubles Saturday.

Johnnon’s second season at Point Park since transferring from Westmoreland County CC ended with averages of 11.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The 6-2 Johnson was third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding.

Roberts Wesleyan’s Jordan Heath, a 6-10 forward who did not play in the first meeting of the season, came off the bench Saturday for 22 points in 18 minutes of work. Heath was 8 of 13 from the field and 6 of 6 from the foul line.

The Raiders’ Alif Bland, a 6-8 center, had 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting and also added six rebounds and five blocks. Nick Bozzelli was also 7 of 10 from the floor for 16 points. Dan Foley added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Raiders ended up shooting 50 percent (23 of 36) from the field, although that included a 1-for-16 effort from 3-point range. Point Park held Roberts Wesleyan to 37 percent the last 20 minutes.

Point Park shot 34 percent the first half in falling behind. The Pioneers didn’t manage much better after halftime and wound up shooting 36 percent (30 of 83). Point Park had seven turnovers in each half while Roberts had eight for the game.

Warrick’s jumper gave Point Park a 16-15 lead after seven minutes. The Pioneers trailed by two, 25-22, after a 3-pointer from Dave Menzies (McKeesport/Serra Catholic) at the 9:38 mark before the Raiders started to take control. Roberts used a 21-7 run to lead, 46-30 with 3:51 to go in the half. 

Trailing 67-55, Point Park put together a quick, 9-2 run featuring two 3-pointers by Cashatt and another by junior Josh Trocchio (North Hills/North Hills) to get within 69-64 at the 12:20 mark.
