WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. – The Point Park University men’s basketball team did not have its usual scoring punch Tuesday as the Pioneers established a season-low for points in an 89-78 loss to visiting Roberts Wesleyan in American Mideast Conference play.
Pictured: Point Park's 22nd-year head coach Bob Rager needs one more victory to tie Jerry Conboy for the school record for wins. Conboy won 305 games from 1969-89.
Point Park (9-5, 3-3 AMC) had not scored less than 80 points all year, but the absence of starting guards Jimmy Sherwood and T.J. Heatherington, who combine to account for 31.7 ppg, caught up to the Pioneers versus Roberts Wesleyan (8-10, 2-5).
It was the second game in a row that Sherwood and Heatherington missed to injury. The Pioneers were able to come away with a 99-93, overtime victory over Cedarville Saturday in the first game missed by the pair, however.
Forward Kris Douse had another monster game for Point Park with 24 points and 20 rebounds, and Joel Cashatt added 22 points and five 3-pointers from the perimeter, but the Pioneers could not keep pace on the offensive end. Point Park scored 14 points below its average of 92.2 points per game, which ranks third in NAIA Division II.
Douse, the NAIA Division II rebounding leader, reached his average on the boards the first half with 10 points and 13 rebounds the first 20 minutes. The 6-7 transfer from Delaware State now has 12 double-doubles in 14 games.
Cashatt also had 10 points by halftime, but Point Park was still trailing, 41-33, at the break. The Red Raiders, who entered the game having lost 10 of their last 12 games, had opened up a 10-point lead, 41-31, late in the half.
Josh Trocchio, who had 16 points on the night, opened the second half with one of his four 3-pointers to ignite a 13-6 run. Douse finished off the spurt with a transition layup to pull the Pioneers within 47-46 at the 15:45 mark.
But Roberts Wesleyan, which had five players in double figures, responded with a 14-2 run that featured three 3-pointers from reserve Jacob Russell for a 61-48 lead with 11:10 remaining. Russell ended up with a team-high 18 points off the bench on the strength of 4 of 7 from beyond the arc.
Guard Rashaad Stokelin had 16 points while forwards Jordan Heath and Alif Bland had 13 points apiece for the Red Raiders. Dan Foley added 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The Roberts lead grew to as much as 65-51 with 9:31 t go, but Point Park managed to get the deficit down to 70-61 on a trey by Trocchio with 6:17 to play. But instead of cutting into the lead further, Roberts Wesleyan stayed ahead by double-digits at 74-64 two minutes later.
Then Cashatt connected twice from downtown and hit a jumper in between to get Point Park within 78-72 at the 2:11 mark. From there, the Red Raiders made 11 of 12 free throws to put the game away at the line. Roberts Wesleyan had been only 15 of 27 from the charity stripe up to that point in the game.
Point Park shot 37 percent overall and 30 percent (10 of 33) from long range. The Pioneers were undone by missing 17 free throws. Point Park made only 16 of 33 foul shots. Roberts Wesleyan shot 42 percent, and trailed in rebounding, 53-48.
Point Park continues AMC play this weekend. The Pioneers visit Mt. Vernon Nazarene Friday (7:30 p.m.), and travel to Wilberforce Saturday (2 p.m.). The start time at Wilberforce has been moved ahead from its original time of 4 p.m.
