PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University baseball program has signed WPIAL Pitcher of the Year Anthony Garofalo from Plum High School, announced the coaching staff late last month.
Garofalo, a 6-foot-3 left-hander, was chosen as the top pitcher in WPIAL Class AAAA by the WPIAL Baseball Coaches Association, and he will be a freshman at Point Park in the fall of 2012.
Garofalo was 6-0 with a 1.86 ERA during his senior season of 2012. He recorded 61 strikeouts in 41.1 innings pitched, and he led Plum (14-2, 10-2 section) to the WPIAL playoffs as the team's ace.
"We are very happy about the signing of Anthony Garofalo," said Point Park head coach Loren Torres. "This signing allows us to continue to build a solid pitching staff, one that allows us to continue to compete nationally.
"Anthony has the ability to impact our program right away. His transition to the college game will determine how quickly he will impact our program."
Point Park was 53-11 and made it to the NAIA World Series during the recently completed 2012 season. The Pioneers finished 5th of 10 teams at the World Series and set a school record for wins. The 53 victories were tied for third-most in the NAIA.
Point Park plays its home games at Green Tree Park, which is located near Parkway Center Mall just three miles west of the school's Downtown Pittsburgh campus.
