PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University senior third baseman Frank Marko was named the AMC Baseball Player of the Week for games played during the final week of the regular season April 25-May 1. This announcement from the AMC came late last week on May 6.
Marko had a career year as a senior, and he finished the season in strong fashion. Marko batted .571 (8 for 14) the last week of the regular season, which helped Point Park finish strong and earn the #1 seed in the AMC Baseball Tournament.
Marko ended the year hitting safely in nine of his final 10 games. During that span, he hit .484 (15 for 31) with eight of his career-high 21 RBIs. That tear raised Marko's season average to a career-best .333.
For the week that he was honored with the AMC Player of the Week award, Marko had two or more hits in three of the five games he played that week. He was 3 for 3 with an RBI versus Cedarville April 29 in a victory that guaranteed the Pioneers their first playoff berth since 2004.
The next day, he was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double in a key road victory at Cedarville. Although not included in the week of the award, Marko's season-ending tear started April 23 when he was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, two doubles and a sacrifice fly at Notre Dame (OH). That game put Marko into a hot streak and started the Pioneers on their playoff run.
Marko, a native of Robinson Twp., Pa., and a gradaute of Montour High School, was the starting third baseman for the Pioneers this year. For his three-year career, Marko hit .302 with 28 RBIs in 102 career games.
