PITTSBURGH -- Two errors that led to four unearned runs, a 45-minute rain delay in the fourth inning and Penn State-Greater Allegheny using seven pitchers in nine innings all combined to put Point Park University in a funk as the Pioneers lost at home to PSU-GA, 7-2, in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday at Green Tree Park.
Point Park (33-10, 11-5 AMC), which is rated No. 25 in this week's NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, will now shift its focus back to American Mideast Conference play. The Pioneers conclude the regular season with four games versus Cedarville University this weekend, and those games will determine the postseason fate of both teams.
Point Park is a half game out of first place in the AMC and is within reach of a possible AMC regular season championship. The Pioneers host Cedarville for two games on Senior Day Friday (1 p.m.) before visiting Cedarville for two games Saturday (1 p.m.).
Things played out in a slighty bizarre fashion Wednesday at Green Tree Park as the visiting Lions (25-10-1, 15-1 PSUAC) had seven pitchers combine to allow just five hits over the nine innings that game was scheduled for.
None of the nine batters in the Point Park lineup faced any of the pitchers more than once, and the Pioneers managed only two unearned runs. In the Point Park first, Brian Grise reached on an error, stole second and then raced home on a throwing error by the catcher following his swipe of third.
Point Park's other run came after Kyle Lucot reached on an error, stole second, stole third and came home on Dave Angle's sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Point Park starting pitcher Alcibiades Gonzalez opened the game by retiring the first nine batters he faced, but PSU-GA added four runs just before the rains came in the middle of the fourth.
In the top of the fourth, the Lions got four runs on three singles, but a costly error allowed the second two runs to score. PSU-GA started the inning with a couple of hits, a walk and a groundout to take a 2-1 lead, alright. The third single of the inning loaded the bases, but the throw back to the infield trickled out of play, which allowed two runs to come around.
Shortly after the Lions took their 4-1 lead, a rain storm rolled through and caused a 45-minute delay. After play resumed, the Lions got three more runs with the last two coming after an error in the eighth extended the inning long enough for Sam Weightman's two-run double and a 7-2 lead.
Gonzalez (3-2) took the loss with five runs, three earned runs and five hits in five innings. Relievers Mike Palmer (1.1 IP) and Jon Corcoran (2.2 IP) did not give up an earned run the last four innings. Corcoran struck out three and walked one.Frank Marko had two of Point Park's five hits.
