Oct. 21, 2010
PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University athletic department announced its 2011 baseball schedule today, and the Pioneers are set to play 54 regular season games this coming spring.
The Pioneers, under second year coach Loren Torres, begin their season March 1 at WV Tech before traveling to Winter Haven, Fla., March 5-12 for 10 games at the RussMatt Invitational.
Point Park has 20 home games on its schedule, and all home games will be played at the Pioneers' newly acquired home field, Green Tree Park in Green Tree, Pa. The ball field was formerly the home of Duquesne Univ. baseball.
Point Park's first scheduled home game in its new facility is March 16 vs. Penn State-Beaver.
The Pioneers will play 20 games as part of a challenging American Mideast Conference schedule. Point Park will play a four game series versus each of the five other AMC schools -- Malone, Walsh, Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Notre Dame (OH) and Cedarville.
Conference play opens up at Malone April 1. Each AMC series will include a doubleheader at home and a doubleheader on the road.
Aside from the games at the RussMatt Invitational, Point Park's non-conference opponents include a home-and-home series with WV Tech and Penn State-Beaver. Point Park will visit Tennessee Temple, an NAIA school, for a four-game set, and it will play host to NAIA SUNY-Canton for a four-game series.
The non-conference schedule is rounded out with doubleheaders versus Penn State-Greater Allegheny, at Gannon, at Lock Haven and at Salem International.
