PITTSBURGH -- No. 19 Point Park University has had a lock on the KIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week award the first two weeks of the season. The Pioneers' staff notched another weekly conference award when sophomore right-hander Alex Mateo was named the KIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week March 3-9, 2014, the league office announced on Monday.
Mateo, a native of Miami, Fla., who transferred from Broward (Fla.) College this year, won the award based on his 1-hitter versus NAIA Viterbo (Wis.) on March 7. Not only did he allow only one hit in the seven-inning shutout, he also struck out 10 and walked just one in the 3-0 victory. Viterbo entered the game with an 8-3 record.
It was the second week in a row that Point Park had the top pitcher in the conference. Senior ace Manny Perdomo, also from Miami, Fla., tossed a three-hit shutout of Davenport (Mich.) on March 1 to win the award last week.
Mateo has made three starts thus far in his Point Park career. He is 2-1 with a 1.98 ERA. Opponents are hitting .229 off of him, and he has 19 strikeouts compared to two walks. He got two starts on the Pioneers' trip to Florida last week, the first of which was a shutout of Madonna (Mich.) March 2 in which he blanked the Crusaders on seven hits.
Point Park returns to action March 11 for an NAIA, non-conference doubleheader at Shawnee State (12 p.m.).
