Internship Requirements

JOUR  313, 413 (undergraduate) and 551, 552 (graduate)

Students can earn three credits for a supervised, registered internship during their attendance at Point Park. Students earn these credits by completing a minimum of 200 hours in an approved setting at a newspaper or magazine, advertising or public relations agency, television or radio station, public relations or advertising department of a corporation, company or nonprofit organization or agency. Students can register for two internships during their tenure at the University.

To be approved for an internship, undergraduate students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be at least a second-semester sophomore, having completed 45 or more credits. Graduate students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have completed 12 credits in the program.

Students must first secure an internship using the tools (posted notices, databases) in the School of Communication office. The student and the work-site supervisor must then complete an internship contract and legal documents, which are available in the School of Communication office.

Students must obtain the approval or sponsorship of a faculty member teaching in the specific internship area, and they must obtain the permission of the Department Chairperson (for undergraduates) or the Graduate Program Director (for graduates). 

An internship at the student's full-time employment must entail definite changes in responsibility to be approved. A second internship must be at a second site. Internships may be paid or unpaid.
