Background

Laurence Lyons Murphy, Ph.D., has been a philosophy and literature professor in both the United States and Europe. He has a Ph.D. in comparative literature and philosophy from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and in addition to Rutgers, he did graduate work at the Sorbonne, and the University of Vienna in Austria. His areas of expertise are particularly in continental philosophy, American Literature and phenomenology. He also specializes in axiology, which is the study of human value systems, and hermeneutics, which is the phenomenological interpretation of texts.

In addition to teaching at Rutgers, the College of New Jersey, and Temple University’s Tyler School of Art (where he served for 14 years as the executive coordinator for the Intellectual Heritage Program), Murphy has lectured at University of Paris, Nanterre and was a TA at the University of Vienna in Austria. He was the editor of a literary journal, ellipses, still available online at litjournal.com, and worked for James Jones (author of the Thin Red Line and From Here to Eternity) in Paris, France, where he worked on manuscripts and depositions of survivors of the Holocaust. Murphy is a professor of the humanities and the director of interdisciplinary studies in the Department of Humanities and Human Sciences at Point Park University.
