PITTSBURGH -- The 2014 Point Park University volleyball schedule has been announced with the Pioneers playing 40 matches beginning with the season opener Aug. 21 at West Virginia Tech.
The Pioneers will once again test themselves in the NAIA ranks, and they will also face a slate of 10 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches with one meeting against each of the other volleyball teams in the league.
"In our non-conference schedule, we are once again excited to have the opportunity to compete against some of the upper echelon programs of the NAIA and top NCAA Division II programs of the Mid-Atlantic Region," said Pioneers head coach Mike Bruno. "Our schedule should serve us well in the conference postseason and hopefully into the NAIA national tournament."
Although Point Park will be spending a lot of time away from home with only 11 of the 40 regular season matches at home in the Student Center Gym, only 11 of their matches will be true road contests. The Pioneers will be visiting several tournaments throughout the year, which is a big reason why they have 18 matches at neutral sites.
The KIAC schedule is favorable for the Pioneers given that five of the 10 conference matches are at home. Two are at neutral sites and only three are on the road.
Most notably about the schedule is that Point Park will host the KIAC Tournament Nov. 14-15 in the Student Center Gym. The 11-team, single-elimination tournament will be the culmination of the conference season and will determine the KIAC's automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament.
Another tournament that Point Park have on campus is the Battle of the Boulevard Point Park-Carlow Crossover to be held Sept. 5-6. This event will be jointly hosted by Point Park and Carlow and offers three matches for each team. Four KIAC teams will be in attendance with Point Park, Carlow, IU Southeast and Cincinnati Christian.
The Pioneers will compete in several tournaments around the country with many of them having some of the top teams in the NAIA in attendance. Point Park will have six matches versus teams that qualified for the NAIA tournament last year. Also, the Pioneers will have five matches versus teams that were ranked in the final NAIA Top 25 Poll of 2013.
After the season opener Aug. 21 at WVU Tech, the Pioneers visit the Volley in the Mountains hosted by Montreat (N.C.) College Aug. 22-23. Point Park will face host Montreat and No. 16 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), an NAIA tournament team from a year ago, to highlight that event.
The Pioneers then visit the St. Xavier-Trinity Christian Tournament Aug. 29-30 where the four matches are highlighted by a rematch with Lindsey Wilson and a meeting with No. 22 Trinity Christian (Ill.).
Point Park will play a quad match at No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor (Ind.) on Oct. 3-4 to play two of the top teams from the Crossroads League. That weekend also includes a match with No. 10 Georgetown (Ky.).
After making their annual trip to the Clearwater (Fla.) Christian Invitational Oct. 10-11 to play Northwood (Fla.), Florida College, Clearwater Christian (Fla.) and Ave Maria (Fla.), the Pioneers go to their final regular-season tournament Oct. 24-25 at Indiana Tech. There they will meet St. Francis (Ind.), Indiana Tech, St. Catherine (Ky.) and Kentucky Christian.
The home schedule not only has the Battle of the Boulevard Sept. 5-6, but it is followed up with a marquee home date Sept. 9 with NCAA Division II Edinboro at 7 p.m. The Pioneers also host NCAA Division II opponents Fairmont State (Sept. 16), West Liberty (Sept. 24), Pitt-Johnstown (Oct. 21) and Glenville State (Nov. 1).
Pitt-Johnstown qualifed for the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regionals last year as did Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.), the latter of which the Pioneers will see Sept. 20 in a tri-match on the road. Point Park's regular season finale will be another NCAA Division II opponent with a road date at Shippensburg.
Of the five KIAC home matches, two of them will be at the Battle of the Boulevard with IU Southeast Sept. 5 and Cincinnati Christian Sept. 6. The Pioneers will also host KIAC foes Indiana Kokomo (Sept. 19), Brescia (Ky.) (Oct. 19) and Asbury (Ky.) (Nov. 1).
KIAC matches away from home will include a tri-match at Midway (Ky.) with Alice Lloyd (Ky.) also in attendance, at Indiana East, at Rio Grande and the annual Jam The Gym event versus Carlow at Kiski Area High School.
