NORTH EAST, Pa. – Point Park University men’s golf alum Darin Kowalski won a big amateur tournament on Thursday (May 30) as he shot an impressive 7-under par to win the 36-hole Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship by five shots at Lake View Country Club.
Kowalski, who played for the Point Park men’s golf team as a senior in 2009-10, fired rounds of 69 and 68 for a two-round score of 137. All 36 holes were played on Thursday, and Kowalski led a group of three players by three shots after 18 holes.
A native of North Huntingdon, Pa., Kowalski stretched out the final margin of victory to five shots by collecting another five birdies in the afternoon round, just as he did in the earlier 18.
Second-place Arnold Cutrell (72-70) at 2-under and third-place John Pratkanis (73-70) at 1-under were the only other players under par for the tournament. Kowalski beat a field of some of the most well-known amateurs in Western Pennsylvania such as Cutrell, Artie Fink, Jr. (T4) and Sean Knapp (T6), among others.
Kowalski came to Point Park in 2009-10 as a transfer from CCAC-South. That was the first year the Pioneers sponsored men’s golf after the program was dormant for 37 years. Kowalski finished first three times and second twice in his six tournaments that season.
