Assistant Professor Marcia Sturdivant Honored by Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh

Dr. Marcia M. Sturdivant, assistant professor in the Humanities and Human Sciences Department at Point Park University, was honored with the award for Civic Leadership at the Ronald H. Brown 2009 Leadership Awards Gala held by the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh on December 4. Dr. Sturdivant was acknowledged for her more than 15 years of service with the Office of Children, Youth and Families and for her work with African American children.
"[Social services] is difficult work but it is so rewarding when you help someone," Dr. Sturdivant says. "As an African American you have a responsibility to help your own community."
President of the Black Child Development Institute -Pittsburgh Affiliate, Dr. Sturdivant is an expert in program administration, policy development and evaluation and cultural competency. She lectures extensively on both the local and national level on child maltreatment, racism and its effect on child development, family group decision making, spirituality and culturally-based intervention strategies.
Dr. Sturdivant is a Point Park graduate. She holds a master's degree in criminology/correctional science from the University of Detroit as well as a doctorate in educational and developmental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.
